PRESS RELEASE

His Excellency Ambassador Madhu Raman Acharya, Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations, made a farewell call on Secretary-General of the United Nations His Excellency Mr. Ban Ki-moon at latter’s office today afternoon.

Ambassador Acharya expressed his gratitude to the Secretary-General for his continued support to the peace process in Nepal and requested the United Nations to stay the course until its conclusion. He also appreciated the role of the Secretary-General on raising the voice on many challenging issues including adverse effects of financial and economic crisis, food crisis and climate change crisis to the Least Developed Countries.

Secretary-General Mr. Ban expressed his concern on the slow progress of Nepal’s peace process, expressed his hope for its early conclusion and pledged to continue the UN’s support as requested. Ambassador Acharya mentioned that recent remarks from the political parties on the Secretary-General’s report on the peace process in Nepal reflected internal political differences, not opposition to the Secretary-General’s suggestion that the parties needed to work together on remaining issues in the peace process, and that such controversy, though not unusual in a peace process when UN has been involved for a while, could have been avoided.

Recalling his memory of his first visit to Nepal in 1972 and his recent visit in October 2008 including his visit to Lumbini, Secretary-General Mr. Ban highlighted his special attachment towards Nepal.

They also discussed Nepal’s continuing participation in UN’s peacekeeping operations.

Minister Counsellor Mr. Amrit Bahadur Rai and the Military Advisor Col. Purna Silwal were also present at the meeting.
