Here in the UK, well-meaning middle-class types see the Gurkhas as stalwart servants of the Crown shamefully denied certain “rights” assumed to apply to all who take the Queen’s shilling. However, the Gurkhas are mercenaries recruited under a 200-year-old treaty with Nepal that specifies no “right” to settle in the UK. Read more news
