PRESS RELEASE

His Excellency Ambassador Madhu Raman Acharya, Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations, made a statement today at the general exchange of views on the Conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and Its Impact on Development.

In his statement, Ambassador Acharya highlighted that the present financial and economic crisis has affected the least developed countries (LDCs) severely and disproportionately by decelerating their growth, reducing investment, contracting export and bringing down the income from tourism and remittance. He underlined that the situation in the landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) has been further exacerbated by their remoteness and bottlenecks in transit transport system.

While highlighting the need of central and proactive role of the United Nations system for the collective and comprehensive resolve of the financial and economic crisis, Ambassador Acharya has called for global stimulus package with special attention to the needs of vulnerable countries to restore growth, confidence, credit and jobs.

Ambassador Acharya said that the present financial crisis also created a historic opportunity to begin comprehensive reform of the global trading and financial architecture, particularly the reform of the Bretton Woods Institutions and regional development banks.

The Conference has adopted outcome document with consensus.

Similarly, earlier on the day, Ambassador Acharya made a statement at the Security Council meeting devoted to a thematic debate on peacekeeping with a particular focus on relationship between the Security Council and the Troop Contributing/Police Contributing Countries, as well as the Financial Contributing Countries.

Ambassador Acharya called for a serious review of the UN’s peacekeeping as a tool for maintenance of international peace and security since the missions are operated under complex environment with increasingly difficult mandates, often with limited consent of the state or the parties concerned.

Ambassador Acharya stressed on the enhanced and institutionalized relationship among Security Council, Troop/Police Contributing Countries and the Secretariat from the time of mandate formulation to key stages of mission planning process through close interaction, information sharing and participation of concerned stakeholders.

While expressing Nepal’s pledge for active and continued involvement and support to the United Nations peacekeeping missions, he stated that Nepal’s current strength of 3,870 military and police personnel would increase by one-thirds after its deployment of troops in Darfur, Chad and additional company in Lebanon by the year end.
