New York- Right honorable Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai arrived in New York this afternoon leading the Nepalese delegation to the 66th United Nations General Assembly.


Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai, Honorable Hisila Yami, Honorable Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Narayan Kazi Shrestha ‘Prakash’ and the member of the delegations were greeted by Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations H.E. Mr. Gyan Chandra Acharya, Dr. Shanker Sharma, Ambassador of Nepal to the United States of America, Mr. Shanker Bairagi, Deputy Permanent Representative, and the staff members of the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations.

Later in the evening, Honorable Narayan Kazi Shrestha ‘Prakash’, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs addressed the High-Level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable diseases. In his address, Hon. Shrestha highlighted that Nepal has implemented the Alcohol Control Act, Tobacco Control and Regulation Act and Food Act as policy instruments for the population-wide interventions to address the Non-communicable diseases.

While stressing on the Nepal’s effort in setting up a surveillance system for NCDs by incorporating NCD date in the Health Management Information Systems, Hon. DPM and Minister for Foreign Affairs underlined the creation of Health Tax Fund in Nepal, which currently generates about 6 million US dollars and its importance to support the prevention and control of NCDs. Hon. Shrestha also stated that the Government of Nepal is providing financial support of up to fifty thousand rupees to the people below the poverty line for the treatment of cancers including free treatment for cancers in children.

Hon. DPM and Minister for Foreign Affairs Shrestha underscored that the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) are in urgent need for the development of national capacities particularly in the areas of funding, governance, health information, development of health workforce and its retention, medical technologies and essential medicines as outlined in the Global Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases. Hon. Shrestha stressed that international support and cooperation in the area of research and development would help promote easy access for essential medicines, vaccines and medical technologies.
