The Right Honourable Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal took part on the Opening Session of the High-Level event and Interactive Roundtable on Climate Change convened by the United Nations Secretary-General today. In his statement, the Right Honorable Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal highlighted the adverse effects of climate change on Nepal’s efforts in meeting the targets of Millennium Development Goals. He stated that the disruption on the Himalayan ecosystem and the melting of snow in the Himalayas may cause catastrophe to the property and lives of people living in the downstream. He urged the international community to join hands and recommit themselves to address the shared threats of climate change on the basis of common but differentiated responsibilities. The Least Developed Countries are the worst affected countries as they lack the financial and technical resources to curb the undesirable effects of climate change, he said.

The Right Honorable Prime Minister Nepal said that it would be in enlightened self interest of the international community to provide substantially enhanced level of support to LDCs and other developing countries in order to effectively address the comprehensive threats and multiple consequences of climate change through mitigation and adaptation measures and transfer of technology and funds. Leaders from around the world including US President Barack Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy addressed to the Opening Session High-Level event on climate change.

The Right Honorable Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal held meeting with the President of Bolivia, H. E. Eva Morales. The two leaders have exchanged the experience of constitution making process during the meeting. They have also discussed the various concerns and possibilities of cooperation between land locked developing countries.

The Right Honorable Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal held meeting with H. E. Sheik Hamad Bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of State of Qatar. Both leaders have expressed their satisfaction on the excellent state of bilateral relations subsisted between two countries and agreed to further explore the areas of mutual cooperation.

The Right Honorable Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, on the sideline, met the President of Republic of Korea H.E. Mr. Lee Myung-bak. He also attended the luncheon hosted by the United Nations Secretary-General and the reception hosted by the President of Nauru and Chairman of Pacific Island Developing States.
