This morning, the Right Honourable Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal participated in the opening of the Sixty-fourth session of the General Assembly of the United Nations. The General-Secretary Mr. Ban Ki-moon presented the report of the organization to the General Assembly at the start of the General Debate of the Sixty-fourth Session. The Honourable Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala also attended the opening session of the General Assembly.  

The Prime Minister Nepal participated in the Summit Meeting with Top-ten Troop and Police Contributing Countries hosted by US President Barrack Obama in the afternoon. Speaking at the Meeting, the Prime Minister Nepal said that UN peacekeeping has contributed to stabilize the situation and promote international peace and security. The Prime Minister stated that Nepal is the fifth largest troop contributor and committed to continue even higher level of participation in UN peacekeeping operations in the days to come. The Prime Minister stressed the need to recognize the links between unaccounted proliferation of small arms and its impacts on peacekeeping. He highlighted the various challenges to UN peacekeeping and stressed the need to training and equipment support to the troop contributing countries. He highlighted the role of the Nepalese army and police personnel in peacekeeping operations. President Obama pledged to work together with the troop-contributing countries bilaterally and multilaterally to strengthen the UN peacekeeping operations. The Prime Minister also thanked the US President for organizing the meeting.  Foreign Minister Hon. Sujata Koirala  and Permanent Representative of Nepal Madhu Raman Acharya were also present during the meeting, which was attended by leaders of top troop contributing countries.  

The Prime Minister Nepal also participated in a High-Level Event to mark the Culmination of the Work of the Taskforce on Innovative Financing for Health Systems, co-hosted by Mr. Gordon Brown, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Mr. Robert Zoellick, President of the World Bank Group. In his intervention at the program, the Prime Minister Nepal introduced the major policy of Nepal towards financing for health systems. At the same occasion, the Prime Minister expressed Nepal’s commitments to three actions namely further reduction of financial barriers to the poor by providing cash-in-hand incentive to women to attend antenatal care, esurient of providing more effective health services to the target groups, and improvement of the governance of health sector. Hounourable Health Minister Umakanta Chaudhari was also present in the program. 

On the Sidelines of the Sixty-fourth Session the General Assembly of the United Nations, the Prime Minister Nepal had a meeting with His Excellency Mr. Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission. The matters relating to the cooperation of the European Commission in Nepal, developments in the peace process in Nepal and other related issues were discussed during the meeting. The Honourable Foreign Minister was also present during the discussion. 

The Prime Minister Nepal was also present in a luncheon hosted by Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-moon in honour of Heads of State and Government. Likewise, the Prime Minister was received by the US President Mr. Barrack Obama in a Program hosted for the Heads of Delegation and Spouses to the Sixty-fourth Session of UN General Assembly in the evening. Mrs. Gyatri Nepal, Spouse of the Prime Minister was also present on the reception program. Mrs. Nepal also attended the luncheon hosted by Mrs. Ban Soon-taek, Spouse of Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-moon, in honour of spouse of Heads of State and Government.
