Kathmandu,The Minister of Environment, Science and Technology Ganesh Shah has stated that the climate change will be made national issue.

He added  “ Nepal is one of the countries which is undergoing the severe problem of climate change but due to lack of necessary data and investigation, government has not able to work effectively, for that ministry shall immediately proceed for its initiation.”

He informed  that the ministry is taking initiation in establishing Himalaya Investigation Center on regional level in Nepal, making easy access of the poorer nations like Nepal in the field of various fund and  world environment, and implementing REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation) project by keeping it in carbon trade. He added " these policies will help in adopting  the adverse effects of climate change", and further informed that the government is  formulating policies for controlling the growing pollution of Katmandu. 

Minister Shah mentioned in his statement on interaction seminar organized by Asia Journalist Association-Nepal on last Sunday in Katmandu "the role of  media in the impact of  environment protection and Climate Change". He told that the media can play a vital role in spreading public awareness  about the effects and adoption of climate change and requested to prioritize it .

During seminar the discussion was mainly focused on adverse effects of climate change and about its preventive measures. The join secretary of the ministry, Purushottam Ghimire presented the paper that comprises the effects of climate change like growth of temperature, heavier rainfall cause flooding in many regions  and land sliding, extreme drought is increasing, decrease in agricultural production, ecosystem are changing, warmer temperatures affect human health, scarcity of drinking water,  sea level is rising, glaciers and permafrost are melting.

The various investigations have shown that twenty glaciers out of 2,323 in the Himalayan region of Nepal are in the danger of bursting because of climate change. The join secretary Ghimire added that Annex countries who have been industrialized, polluting environment ,deforestation and increasing greenhouse gases. Various research has shown that pollutions, greenhouse gases and deforestation is the main cause of climate change.


 The join secretary Ghimire said that the government has been initiating and co-working with  UNDP (United Nations Development Program) New York Global Project, Danish Embassy, World Bank , LDC (Least Development Countries) fund and DFID (Development Fund for International Development) to adopt the adverse effects of climate change.

In the very seminar, the joint secretary Mr. Ghimire provided the information about UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Chang), Kyoto Protocol and IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) . 

The Chief , Environment Assessment Section Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology , Batu Krishna Uprety requested all the organizations working in the field of environment protection to perform their work within the legal framework being disciplined along with giving information about Environmental Impact Assessment Status, Initiatives  and Challenges . 

The president of Asia Journalist Association-Nepal, Bishnu Nisthuri emphasized that since the climate change is global issues , the journalists have to have profound knowledge about national and international policies, treaties and agreements pertaining to it . He informed that the association is supposed to operate training on the field of climate change in the five regions of  Nepal collaborating with the Ministry of Environment Science and Technology.
