Sushil Pyakurel is a former Commissioner of Nepal’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and founder of INSEC, An front line and reputed Human Rights Organization. Since the peace agreement was signed last year 2006 Nov, Mr. Pyakurel has been engaged in raising national and international attention and support to the elections to the constituent assembly.

Mr. Sushil has played important role to establish National Human Rights Institution (National Human Rights Commission) in Nepal. Mr. Pyakurel is always in front line in the struggle against Impunity and for  Accountability.

 

 Due to his strong criticism against royal takeover, he had been restricted to travel after the February 1. His travel restrictions were unwillingly relaxed in March 20 after a letter that had been submitted to the Nepalese Government written by eight US Senators followed by an invitation from the UNOHCHR and an immense pressure from the international community. The Nepalese Government permitted him to fly to USA where he had the opportunity to brief the US Senate office, high government officials, political leaders and other international human rights organizations regarding the scenario of human rights situation in Nepal after royal takeover. He was also invited to speak in European Parliament about the HR situations in Nepal where he strongly raised the issue of smart sanction to the royal family including those who are involved in royal repression. He stayed in India for a year to make strong international lobby for the restoration of democracy.

He has also played the crucial role to create a unanimous support in the 61st annual meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Commission for the establishment of the Office of High Commissioner in Nepal to monitor the human rights situation. 

Due to his long efforts with the support of other human rights defenders, the seven political parties (SPA) and the Maoists agreed to respect human rights principle mentioned in no 8 of the 12 points agreement.

As the most respected and distinguished human rights defender in Nepal, he is lobbying towards addressing the avoidance of impunity and accountability in capacity of the President of the Accountability Watch Committee (AWC)- the informal collective initiative of civil society for accountability. Moreover, Mr. Pyakurel is playing a central role in the establishment of the dialogue among different stakeholders through Dialogue Group for the Constituent Assembly emerged for initiating different level of dialogues to address pressing issue related directly and indirectly to the Constituent Assembly and Constitution making process. His efforts as a prominent member of civil society, promotes discussion on burning issues related to peace, human rights, democratic process and governance in the Constituent Assembly process, and also building confidence among disfranchised communities to promote political stability through a successful Constituent making.
