New York (Day 6)- The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialized agency of the United Nations addressed the indigenous queries at the Eight Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII).

Providing assistance to indigenous communities by the agency was at the center of discussion between indigenous delegates and IFAD representatives. Indigenous peoples’ relationship to the land and the dependence on agricultural economy was mentioned while emphasizing the need for funds to carry out activities including capacity building and advocacy by indigenous delegates present at the meeting.

Established in 1977, IFAD is a financial institution that has provided assistance to rural poor people, governments, donors and other partners with an objective to eradicate poverty and hunger in rural areas of developing countries. With local level operations in 115 countries and territories, IFAD has designed and implemented projects in different natural, socio-economic and cultural environments.

Indigenous peoples around the world have had less political representation and almost all have been deprived of equal economic benefits as their counterparts. Indigenous traditional practices have incorporated nature as a vital part of their world upon which their survival depends. Due to this reason, conservation and sustainability of these resources are ensured by indigenous peoples.
