The United Nationalist Nepalese felicitates His Majesty King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev on the auspicious occasion of his sixty-third birthday.  Although the King no longer occupies a position in the formal apparatus of the state, His Majesty remains a living symbol of the unity and heritage of the Nepalese people themselves. Even when shorn of its political role, the Nepalese Crown represents the historic force which forged Nepal into a modern nation-state.  It is for this reason that the UNN wishes to utilize this occasion to issue a nationwide plea for unity, democracy, and peace.

The preceding years have been difficult for Nepal. Peace and unity remain elusive as sectarian violence and divisive politics continue to destabilize and enervate the nation. The peace process which began in 2006, though touted as the end of the nation’s internal strife, has yet to be formulated on bases which can remain viable in the long term.  Nepal’s major political parties are presently unable to form a functioning government, and the constitutional disposition of the state itself has been left unresolved.  Nepal’s own territorial integrity has been encroached upon, and it is the Nepali people themselves who have born the brunt of suffering in the present leadership vacuum.

On the occasion of the fifteenth anniversary of the promulgation of the Constitution of 1990, His Majesty spoke of the need for peace, unity and national pride in order to safeguard the nation itself.  Reflecting upon the spread of terrorism and violence within Nepal, the King remarked, “The nation has already paid a price to learn that a representative polity cannot be activated in the absence of peace and peace itself will remain elusive if patriotism is not made the focal point.”  Even after the momentous events of the past four years, this message remains both relevant and true.  With no shared focal point for national unity, Nepal is caught in political malaise, and as long as this remains the case, a peaceful national settlement will remain out of reach.

The UNN calls on Nepal’s political parties to take this opportunity to put aside their own self-interest and cooperate for the betterment of the Nepali people.  The Nepali people themselves must remain the true representatives of Nepal’s sovereignty. It is with this consideration in mind that the UNN calls once more for a free and fair public referendum to allow Nepal’s sovereign people to determine all issues of national importance, including the constitutional form of government and Nepal’s Hindu identity. All groups and factions with a stake in Nepal’s political future must abide by democratic means, and shun the politics of violence and intimidation. As His Majesty the King once remarked to a formal gathering at Tribhuvan University, “Violence is not the means to reaching any agreement. The people yearn for a corruption-free, pro-people form of governance.  True democratic conduct envisages a political exercise totally devoted to being guided by the people’s wishes in realising their aspirations.”

The United Nationalist Nepalese congratulates His Majesty the King on his sixty-third birthday, and extends its best wishes to one of Nepal’s preeminent citizens in the hope that he may enjoy the day surrounded by family and friends. In the same spirit, the UNN encourages all Nepalese to rediscover their own national unity and common heritage, in the hope that the nation may once again share in a cooperative effort for economic, social and spiritual progress.
