Exclusive: 8 photos, 1 video: न्यू योर्क- नेपालमा स्याङ्जा जिल्लाको राङभाङ घर भएका देबेन्द्र थापा मगर अमेरिकामा सन् १९९८ देखी २००६ सम्म २८ वटा ब्याबसायिक बक्सिङ (pro-boxing) भिडन्तहरुमा खेलेर नेपालको नाम चम्काउन सफल भएका गर्बिला ब्यक्तित्व हुन्।

२८ खेलमा उनले २० वटा खेलमा आफ्नो प्रतिद्वन्दीलाई गोर्खाली मुक्काले नराम्रो गरी हराउन सफल भएका थिए। त्यसै कारण उनी अमेरिकि खेल जगतमा 'नेपाल टाइगर' (Nepal Tiger) को नामले चर्चित बन्न पुगेका थिए। जसमध्ये १३ जीत त नकआउट (Knockout) नै थियो। २८ खेलमा उउनले शिर्फ ६ पटक हार बेहोर्नु परेको थियो।

सन् २००१ मा उनको १६ औं भिडन्त हेर्न न्यू जर्सीको एट्लान्टिक सिटी पुगेको यो पङ्क्तिकारले उनी १५ औं पटकको भिडन्तसम्म अपराजित रहेको रेकर्ड थाहा पाउँदा गर्बले छाती धक्क फुलाएको र शीर उँचो पारेको थियो।


त्यति मात्र कहाँ हो र- उनले भारतीय गोर्खाली सेनामा सन् १९९२ मा भर्ती भएको एक बर्षपछि अर्थात सन् १९९३ देखी १९९७ सम्म २ राष्ट्रिय र १५ वटा अन्तरराश्ट्रिय बक्सिङ खेलकूदमा ९ स्वर्ण (Gold), ६ कास्य (silver) र १ रजत पदक (bronze medal) जितीदिएर नेपालको छिमेकी मुलुक भारतलाई विश्वमा चम्काउने खेलाडी पनि यिनै लाहुरे मुक्केबाज हुन्।

उनले एशिया स्तरका थुप्रै खेलमा स्वर्ण, कास्य र र जत पदक जितेका थिए । सन् १९९६ मा अमेरिकाको एट्लान्टामा भएको ओलम्पिक खेलमा क्वाटर फाइनलसम्म पुगेका थिए भने सन् १९९७ मा अमेरिकाको टेक्सासमा भएको विश्व सैन्य बक्सिङ प्रतियोगितामा कास्य पदक जितेका थिए।

सधैं अर्काको देशलाई लडीदिएर अरुकै मुलुकको नाम कमाउँदा कमाउँदा दिक्क भएका बक्सर थापाले अमेरिकामा स्वतन्त्ररुपमा नेपालको नाममा खेल खेल्न सकिने देखेपछि टेक्सासमा सम्पन्न खेलपछि भारतीय सेनाको जागिरलाई माया मारेर अमेरिकामा बस्ने निधो गरेका थिए।

त्यसयता उनले गरेको खतरनाक भिडन्तहरुले उनलाई अमेरिकि मेडियाहरुले 'नेपाल टाइगर' (Nepal Tiger) या 'हिमालयन टाइगर' कोरुपमा चित्रण गर्न थाले। यसरी बनेका थिए उनी अमेरिकामा नेपाललाई खेलकूदबाट चर्चाको शिखरमा पुर्‍याउने पहिलो नेपाली छोरो या भनूँ उनको नेपालकोलागि खेल्ने धोको यसरी पुरा भएको थियो।

उनी उनको बजन सुपर फ्लाइवेटमा सन् २०००-२००२ तिर विश्व बक्सिङ मर्यादाक्रममा उम्दा खेलाडीकोरुपमा दर्ज भएका थिए। उनी NABA (North American Boxing Association)मा ५ औं नम्बरमा, WBA (World Boxing Association) मा १० औँ नम्बरमा र WBC (World Boxing Championship) मा २५ औं स्थानमा उक्लिएका थिए।

यसैबिच, सन् २००६ मा डाक्टरको सल्लाहअनुसार उनको आँखा कम्जोर हुँदै गएको कारण चश्मा लगाउनु पर्ने अवस्था भएकोले नचाहँदानचाहँदै उनले आफ्नो खेल जीवनलाई सदाकोलागि बिदा गर्न वाध्य भएका थिए ।

सन् २००५ मा उनले खेल्कूद कै कारण एक्ट्रा अर्डिनरी ग्रिन कार्ड पाउन सफल भएका थिए। सन् १९९७ देखी अमेरिकाको बक्सिङ जगतलाई थर्कमान पारेका उनी १० बर्षपछि अर्थात सन् २००७ मा मात्र नेपाल फर्केका थिए- आफ्नो आमा-बुवा, श्रीमती, दुई छोरी र एक छोरालाई भेट्न।

गत बर्ष सन् २०११ मा अमेरिकि नागरिक बनेका बक्सर थापाका दुई छोरी र छोरा यसै हप्ता मात्र अमेरिका आइपुगेका छन् भने उनकी श्रीमती पनि छिट्टै श्रीमानले नाम कमाएको मुलुकमा आउँदैछिन्।

नेपाल र नेपाली समुदायले चिन्न नभ्याएको एउटा प्रतिभाशाली नेपाली छोरो देबेन्द्र थापा मगर भने नेपाल नाम राखेर खेल्न पाएकोमा खुशी छन्। गैर अवासीय नेपाली संघको 'एक पटकको नेपाली संधैको नेपाली' (Once a Nepali, forever Nepali) भन्ने मूलमन्त्र बक्सर थापाको जीवनमा सतप्रतिसत लागू हुन्छ। आखिर जहाँ गएपनि नेपाली मन त हो।

Boxing Game Technical Terms

KO- Or the KnockOut: This occurs when a fighter is floored or knocked down and unable to return to his or her feet unassisted after a ten count.

TKO- Or the Technical Knockout: This occurs when an official steps in during a fight stopping the fight due to a cut or injury or when the a fighter can no longer defend themselves.

TD- Or the Technical Draw: When a bout is ended prematurely and the scoring is even.

TD- Or the Technical Decision: When a bout is terminated prematurely due to a cut or some other circumstance sending the bout to the scorecards.

SD- Or the Split Draw: When two judges disagree on who won a fight, while the third judge has it a draw.

UD- Or Unanimous Decision: A unanimous decision occurs when all three judges agree on a winner.

D- Or Draw: When both boxers tie or earn equal number of points from the judges' scoring the fight.

DQ- Or Disqualification: When a bout is stopped short of knockout or judges' decision because, intentionally, one or both contestants have repeatedly or flagrantly fouled an opponent or violated other rules. The disqualified boxer automatically loses the bout to the opponent. If both are disqualified, (termed a double disqualification) the result is usually declared a no contest regardless of round.

NC- Or No contest: A decision made by the referee to end a fight if he feels that the competitors are not giving their all, or if he feels that the fight has been fixed.
