Washington D.C.- Commemoration of International Women's Day on 6th March 2010 was the pride of America Nepal Women Association of Greater Washington D.C. (ANWA) in Fairlington Center, Virginia.
On the theme “conflict induced Migration and its impact.” Specific objectives of the program were:
Assemble to celebrate struggles and accomplishments for equality, justice, peace and development without the national, ethnic, linguist, cultural, economic, social , religious and political differences.
Looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.
To request recommendations from the participants and handover declaration through the Nepal Embassy to the concern ministries of Nepal.
The thematic presenters were Bishnu Kumari Thapa , D.B Sagar and Seema Dhami .
The president of ANWA, Ms Bishnu Thapa highlighted on international human Rights instruments protecting rights of migrants abroad. She emphasized the pathetic situation of people trying to migrate by illegal means and forwarded her concern on situation of NRN. She visualized the causes of migration, where Nepali women/men are victimized due to the carelessness of Nepal government and added that, the government should be obliged to such issues. She emphasized that, Nepal depends on foreign Employment as in tourism industry or carpet industry. So, foreign Employment be recognized as an industry and invested on it for returns as well. Scholar and Dalit rights activist Mr D.B Sagar expressed the various causes and situations of migration and its obvious adverse impact on women. He presented the positive aspect of migration that, male partners migrating abroad empowered women in one hand and in other, conflict induced internal displacement brought adverse impact on women.
Secretary of ANWA, Seema Dhami presented comparative situation of conflict affected countries such as Nepal , Sri Lanka, Rwanda , Yugoslavia , South Africa, Sudan , Sierra Leon , Lebanon and Somalia. Critically analyzed that conflict and migration has intimate nexus. Therefore, people move from one place to another, exploring better opportunities to make their life dignified. Her presentation based on the Human Development Report 2009. She tried to conclude that, conflict had adverse impact on human life, no matter which country one belongs to. She emphasized the situation of gender disparity of the conflict affected countries. On behalf of ANWA, She pointed out matter enshrined in the memorandum, which was submitted to Nepal Government through Embassy of Nepal in USA. She stated that, ANWA recognized the past effort made by the international as well as by the Nepal Government. Furthermore, among the various suggestions, she emphasized the duty bond Act regarding the NRN and that, the preamble of Act it self speak scope of rights for NRN.
Ms Sharmila Uperti, member of America Nepal journalist Association graciously moderated the program and founder member Ms Vijaya Shah welcomed the participants and highlighted the program objectives. The dignitaries on the dais were Honorable Dhanaraj Gurung as special Guest, Deputy Chief of Mission Mr. Kali Prasad Pokhrel as Chief Guest, First secretary Embassy of Nepal Ananda Sharma, Dalit Rights Activist from Nepal Ms Durga Sob, Human Rights Activist from Nepal Ms. Sharmila Karki, Ms Anjali Chaudhry from SAALT & VISTA USA .
ANWA Vise President Sunita Siwakoti thanked all presenters, participants, media and Nepal Embassy for their valuable time, thoughtful information and insights to meet the objective of the program. Besides these she narrated dedication of ANWA to the community providing free medical service and scholarship to the orphan girl child in Nepal.
