Introduction:

Sapana Pradhan Malla is a leading advocate for women’s rights in Nepal. She is the Founding President of one of Nepal’s most prominent women’s rights organizations, Forum for Women, Law and Development (FWLD), and has been instrumental in securing the recognition of reproductive rights nationally, including the decriminalization of abortion in 2002. While with FWLD, Pradhan Malla was the driving force behind the drafting of the Gender Equality Amendment Act and a Human Trafficking Act, which has since become a legal model for the region. She has also contributed extensively to sensitizing civil institutions in Nepal, such as the judiciary and law enforcement agencies. Using the U.N. Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women as a framework, she has also helped strengthen civil society‘s support of women’s rights in Nepal and other parts of Asia.

As a practicing lawyer before the Supreme Court of Nepal, Pradhan Malla has led several landmark public litigation cases, including cases involving implementation of the new provisions legalizing abortion, criminalization of marital rape, and equality in the nation’s citizenship, marriage and family laws. In addition, she has been a vocal advocate of women’s rights to participation in the army and in foreign employment. As a member of Nepal’s Constituent Assembly, Pradhan Malla coordinated the sub-committee that finalized the Bill on Domestic Violence, which resulted in the enactment of the Domestic Violence (Crime and Punishment) Act in 2008, and is currently actively involved in drafting a new constitution for Nepal. In 2008, Pradhan Malla was awarded the prestigious Gruber Foundation Women’s Rights Prize for her significant contributions to the promotion of gender equality in Nepal.
